Moose Spotted On Main Street and Around Park City

By diana
Apr 04, 2013

There were at least three reports of moose ambling into neighborhoods last week in Park City.  It is that time of year again where they are coming down to get out of the snow and look for food.   It is always such a treat to see these beautiful animals but you must remember to keep your distance, especially if they are with their young.

One sighting was on in a yard in the 2100 block of Park Avenue.  The moose stayed in the yard for a bit then headed for a bicycle trail nearby.

Another sighting drew many spectators because the moose was on the sidewalk in front of a store on the 100 block of Main Street on a busy Thursday evening!  Nothing like going shopping and running into a moose!

We love observing these beautiful animals and one of the many reasons we love living in Park City!

It is that time of year when the wildlife is coming down to town to find food as the snow melts.  There have been several sightings of Moose all around Park City, with many close to roads and businesses.

There was 4 reported sightings last week, but many sightings do go un-reported.  A cow moose and two calves were spotted heading up a hillside in Old Town, close to the intersection of Main Street and Daly Avenue.  Another moose was reported just off Kearns Boulevard in the morning attempting to cross the busy street.  Two others were spotted on Deer Valley Drive and Daly Avenue.  None ever posed a threat, just traffic hazards.

That's why it is so important to be diligent when driving especially at dusk and dawn.  We love seeing these beautiful animals and having them as part of our Park City community!

One of our favorite things to do at the end of summer is hike to the top of beautiful Mount Timpangos.  It is a difficult hike with the summit at 11,700 feet and about 16 miles round trip.   This year the wildflowers were especially vibrant and the views can't be beat.  If you ever want to do a challenging but amazing hike, look into this one it is incredible!

Multiple Moose Sightings in Old Town

In the last week there has been at least six reported moose sightings, with almost all of them in the Old Town area.  We posted a video last week of a Mom and her calf walking down Main Street while cars and on lookers were in awe.  There was also two moose spotted twice just off Park Avenue last week.  Last Tuesday a moose and her calf were just off Deer Valley Dr. and created some traffic issues, the police reported.  Moose were also spotted by the City Park and walking through the water off Poison Creek Lane.  Just last night as we were leaving Main Street to head home around 8:30pm there was a moose and her calf right by the round-about on Deer Valley Dr.  They were just eating the grass and seem to not  care about all the cars passing so closely.  There was a police officer parked across from them, probably to make sure they didn't wander into traffic.

Wildlife officers said that moose out this time of year are in search of green vegetation for food.  They come down to the lower elevations because the snow hasn't melted enough higher up in the mountains.  They anticipate many more sightings the coming weeks and say the moose might even resort to eating in peoples yards.  We love seeing wildlife it is one of the reasons we love living in Park City.

Park City Experiencing Increased Cougar Sightings

State wildlife officials are looking into several mountain lion sightings reported in the Round Valley area of Park City.  The first sighting was reported about two weeks ago.  Around six people have reported seeing mountain lions recently.  Round Valley is a popular place for hikers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers because all of the trails in the area.

All the sightings have been during the day which is ususual because cougars are nocturnal by nature.  Officials think there is more then one cougar due to the fact that there have been repeated sightings in the same area.  Information has been posted near trailheads informing people what to do if they encounter a cougar.  Officials advise to be aware of your surroundings, keep dogs leashed, and you should be fine using the trails.

Park City Wildlife and How to Stay Safe Workshop

Being in Park City means being part of a mountain habitat that we share with wildlife.  Even though Park City has plenty of protected space, as Park City grows the number of conflicts with wildlife increase.  Locals and tourists alike enjoy seeing moose, elk, deer and other animals but caution must be used.  There are also cougar and coyote in the Summit County and people must be aware of what to do if you come across these animals.

Luckily, The Wildlife Protection Society is hosting "Living With Wildlife," Staying Safe in Coyote, Cougar, and Moose Country, an educational workshop offered for residents of Park City, Deer Valley, and surrounding areas.  They are primarily focus on Park Meadows and Fairway Hills residential areas.  They want to increase awareness and understanding of the wildlife in Summit County and provide people with information and tools they can use to prevent conflicts.

The workshop will be held tonight Nov. 10th @ 7pm at the Park Meadows Country Club.  Please call  801-556-5126 for more information.  We love living in the mountains and seeing these beautiful and amazing animals but it is good to be educated about what to do and what not to do!

A friend of mine has a water feature in his back yard at his home in Deer Crest at Deer Valley. One early morning while working at his desk he saw a mountain lion drinking from his stream. He tried to take a photo with his cell phone but it was not a good photo. He installed a security camera that is set up to a motion detector so he won’t miss that lion if it comes back. In the meantime he got this Bull Moose.

Deer Valley Specialist Hiking Edition: Wildlife in Park City

Park City has so much to offer in the way of wildlife, you just have to know where to go to get away from all the people and you can normally see some kind of wild animal.  Being avid hikers we get out as much as possible.  Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort back up to Alta and Brighton Resorts just on the other side of the beautiful Wasatch Range.

While over there we came across a herd of over 20 Mountain Goats with babies on a hike near Alta above 10,500 feet in elevation. We were sitting near some rocks having lunch and the herd did not see us and walked within 50 feet of us before they realized we were there. We did not move while we watched them and they did not seem to care we were there. We were able to watch them for about 15 minutes before they disappeared over a ridge.
