Why celebrate the new year just once? Join Park City Mountain for a day of family activities, food specials, live music, and a fireworks display at Canyons Village. Get your groove on with DJ Velvet starting at 2:30 p.m. and don’t forget to grab a complimentary donut (or three) from the deck. The fireworks begin at 5:30 p.m.

Jaron Lanier

January 5 @ 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.

There are few parts of our lives that aren’t intertwined with the internet. Now is your chance to get the perspective of one of the pioneers who helped create it. Jaron Lanier, scientist, musician, writer, and virtual entrepreneur, has dedicated his life to improving our world through digital culture. He’ll share his ideas on where the internet went wrong, right, and how it can hurt or help society.

The Human Element

January 10 @ 7 p.m.

Presented by Park City Film as part of the Reel Community Series, The Human Element follows renowned photographer James Balog as he documents the clash of humans and environmental change. Never more important than today, Balog explores the natural elements (air, earth, fire, water) as he takes on wildfires, hurricanes, rising sea levels, coal mining, and the changes in the air we breathe. The post-film discussion features The Human Element producer Olivia Ahnemann, who has been producing and directing documentary films for nearly 20 years, and Sharon Anderson Morris, CEO FiReFilms.

January 17 @ 7 p.m.

Head over to O.P. Rockwell for a raucous night of brassy fun, rock, and jazz with MarchFourth. Touring the country year round, this larger-than-life group of musicians and acrobats brings the spirit of celebration and fun with them.

National Geographic Live! On the Trail of Big Cats with Steve Winter

January 19 @ 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Legendary National Geographic photographer Steve Winter comes to the Eccles Center for an evening of big cats. Winter will share tales from his assignments chasing tiger populations in Asia, rare snow leopards in the Himalayas, and jaguars in Latin America. The award-winning photographer will also shed light on our role in big cat conservation.

Sundance Film Festival

January 24 - February 3

The world famous independent film festival brings Hollywood elite and first-time filmmakers from around the globe for a 10-day celebration of storytelling. Check out feature length films, documentaries, shorts, virtual reality projects, workshops, and much more. While there are dozens of ways to enjoy the fest, we suggest splurging on An Artist at the Table (Jan. 24, 6 p.m.) which includes attending the opening night film and a fabulous dinner with Sundance artists.

Slamdance Film Festival

January 25 - 31

Want to go even more indie? As a festival “by filmmakers, for filmmakers” the Slamdance Film Festival pushes the limits of storytelling and gives voice to emerging artists, filmmakers, and storytellers. In addition to the film programming, Slamdance will honor Academy Award-winner Steven Soderbergh with the 2019 Founders Award.
